Harry’s last month living with the Dursleys is not fun. The day before he’s supposed to leave, he asks Uncle Vernon to take him to the train station. Uncle Vernon agrees but makes fun of him for saying he needs to leave from track nine and three quarters, as it says on his ticket given by Hagrid. The next day, Harry arrives at the station and stands between tracks nine and ten, worried about how to find track nine and three quarters. Then, he hears a family of red-haired kids talking about Hogwarts. He asks their mother for help, and she tells him to walk through the barrier between tracks nine and ten. Harry does that and is amazed to find the Hogwarts train on the other side. He gets on the train.

On the train, Harry meets Fred and George Weasley, who are twins going back to school, and their brother Ron, who’s also starting at Hogwarts. Ron tells Harry about wizard stuff like Quidditch (a game like soccer but played on broomsticks), collectible cards called Famous Witches and Wizards cards (like baseball cards), and Every Flavor Beans. One of the cards has a picture of Albus Dumbledore. Ron, who doesn’t have much money, can’t afford the snacks on the train, so Harry buys a bunch with his new wealth and shares them with Ron. Harry also meets an annoying girl named Hermione Granger, who’s really good at school, and sees the mean boy from the uniform shop, Draco Malfoy. All the students have heard about Harry, and he doesn’t know how to deal with his fame.

When they arrive at the station, they get on boats that take them to the Hogwarts castle.
