After being unjustly punished for the snake incident, Harry is confined to his cupboard under the stairs until the summer. Once free, he spends most of his time outside the house to avoid Dudley’s gang of friends. He eagerly looks forward to starting a new school in the fall, where he’ll be far away from Dudley for the first time in his life.

One day, Uncle Vernon instructs Harry to retrieve the mail. Harry notices a letter addressed to him with a strange coat of arms, labeled “The Cupboard under the Stairs.” Uncle Vernon snatches the letter away and shows it to his wife, both of them stunned. They force Dudley and Harry out of the kitchen to discuss what to do.

The following day, Uncle Vernon visits Harry in the cupboard. He avoids discussing the letter but tells Harry to move into Dudley’s second room, which was previously used to store Dudley’s toys. Another letter arrives the next day, addressed to Harry in “The Smallest Bedroom.” Uncle Vernon becomes increasingly alarmed, preventing Harry from getting the letter.

Desperate to reach Harry, Uncle Vernon nails the mail slot shut. However, despite his efforts, twelve letters come for Harry the next day, finding their way under the door or through the cracks. Letters start flooding the house in impossible ways. Uncle Vernon does everything to stop Harry from reading them. Frustrated and furious, Uncle Vernon decides to take his family away from the house. However, at the hotel they stay in, a hundred letters are delivered for Harry.

Uncle Vernon opts for even greater isolation and takes the family to an island with just one shack on it during a dark, stormy night. Inside, Vernon bolts the door. As the clock strikes midnight, marking Harry’s birthday, a loud thud echoes at the door.
