Ten years have elapsed, and Harry is almost eleven years old. He’s enduring a miserable existence, forced to live in a cramped cupboard under the stairs in the Dursley household. He’s regularly mistreated by his cousin, Dudley, who is spoiled and constantly whining.

One morning, Harry is roused from his sleep by his aunt, Petunia, who orders him to cook bacon urgently because it’s Dudley’s birthday, and everything must be perfect. Dudley becomes upset because he has one present less than he did the previous year, amounting to only thirty-seven. When a neighbor cancels plans to watch Harry for the day, Dudley throws a fit since he doesn’t want Harry to accompany him to the zoo on his birthday trip.

At the zoo, the Dursleys pamper Dudley and his friend Piers, completely ignoring Harry as usual. While in the reptile house, Harry becomes captivated by a boa constrictor. To his astonishment, he can communicate with the snake. When Piers notices this, he calls over Mr. Dursley and Dudley, who shoves Harry aside to get a better look at the snake. Suddenly, the glass front of the snake’s enclosure disappears, and the boa constrictor slithers out onto the floor. Dudley and Piers falsely claim that the snake attacked them, leaving the Dursleys in shock.

Back home, Harry is unfairly punished for the snake incident. He’s sent to his cupboard without any food, despite feeling that he had nothing to do with the strange events at the zoo.
