The Dursleys are a wealthy and status-conscious family living in Surrey, England. They’re embarrassed by Mrs. Dursley’s unconventional sister, Mrs. Potter, whom they’ve ignored for years. One ordinary morning, Mr. Dursley sees a strange cat supposedly reading a map, but he dismisses it as his imagination. In traffic, he notices people in colorful cloaks. Later, he overhears excited talk about the Potters, his sister-in-law’s family, and their one-year-old son, Harry.
Feeling uneasy but unsure, Mr. Dursley keeps it to himself. On his way home, he meets a strangely dressed man who rejoices in the news of “You-Know-Who” disappearing, even urging Mr. Dursley, a “Muggle,” to celebrate. Odd occurrences like shooting stars and daytime owls dominate the news.
